Recently I have read post about the troubles that will met any sure who would start building it’s website using Joomla 1.6. Here are some points, quoting the author:
6 reasons why you should not wait for Joomla 1.6
1. Uncertainty
No one knows when it will be released. Not even when the beta version will be released.
2. Instability.
When Joomla 1.6 is released, there will be a lot of patches released before the software is stable enough for a production site.
3. Incompatibility.
Because Joomla 1.6 has a lot of new functions, your favorite extensions will not work as is. They will need to be updated and tested to utilize the new Joomla 1.6 ACL functions, removed sections, nested categories etc.
4. Lacking support
The support for new software will obviously not be as extensive as with established software.
5. Missing documentation
Most likely, the documentation for Joomla 1.6 will not be released at the same time as the software itself. It takes time, and someone has to do it.
6. Incomplete language support
Most languages will not be ready at the time of the Joomla 1.6 release.
Ok, we agree with that language problem but I think that Joomla has really great community and it’s not gonna be a problem to make a professional translation. About uncertainty - actually it’s not a big problem because there are many good examples that show us value of really good products that were created with really huge time resources, so we just hope that 1.6 will be very good. As for extensions - of course it is normal that new software requires new extensions and I don’t think that all Joomla 1.5 extensions were released same day day with 1.5 version.
To cut a long story short - we are still believe that new 1.6 version will be something really awesome despite all those pessimist forecasts.
Google announced that Google Friend Connect features are now available for the Drupal and Joomla content management systems. This means that content publishers using these platforms can integrate Google’s product, which basically turns your site into a mini social network.
“The social gadgets can be placed anywhere in the site using the standard Drupal and Joomla administration interfaces. Site owners can moderate reviews and comments, create new polls to collect information about community members, and then advertise on the site using that information. The newsletter feature allows site owners to create and manage their newsletters using Friend Connect’s interface, and site members can subscribe and unsubscribe as desired using the newsletter gadget.” says Globant’s Mauro Gonzalez on Google’s Social Web Blog.
The Google Friend Connect integrations with Joomla include next features:
- Interest Polls
- AdSense
- Newsletter Subscriptions
- Featured Content
- Gadgets (like Members, Comments, Recommendations, Activities, Reviews and the Social Bar)

It’s needles to say that any Joomla! Day is a great event for community but this time we want to mark that Joomla Day Spain was really something remarkable. The whole team of Joomla Spanish Association, especially Javier, Jordi, Pedro, Laura, Franck, Juan, Jonathan, Pilar and all those I don’t remember the name anymore, made this event really outstanding. It is very important that Joomla community in Spain finds new solutions and presents really great organization. You may know that Joomla Day Spain 08 was in Madrid and this time that decided to choose Barcelona. And next year Joomla Day will be in Mallorca. So we are waiting for new Joomla events from this great community.

It’s not a secret that Joomla was nominated to Best Open Source CMS for 2009 as same as Drupal and Wordpress. Well you know this year lucky beggar is Wordpress. We even don’t know how that in hell happened but it is cruel reality and we can’t do nothing except than to congratulate all WP fans, users and community members (at least it was not Drupal :).
One thing I can tell you for sure - this victory is very important for Wordpress because it actually means that this software is seeing like valid CMS platform and it means that in 2010 struggle will be more interesting than in 2009.
The first ever Joomla! event specifically for third party developers will be in New York City on December 5 and 6.Focused on the transition to Joomla! 1.6, the Joomla! Developer conference will feature all four development coordinators (Louis Landry, Sam Moffatt, Ian MacLennan, Mark Dexter), master Joomla! developer Andrew Eddie, Hannes Papenberg from the 1.6 release team and MooTools team member Aaron Newton. Joomla! 1.6 is currently at alpha 2 status, so this is the time for extension and custom developers to begin working with its new features such as Access Control Lists, JForm, nested sets and other enhancements. The conference is appropriate for developers who have experience working with Joomla! as extension developers, custom developers, and in house staff.
